pedantic nuthatch
Life in a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. B.M.A.T.C., and Etruscan typewriter erasers. Blogged by David Gorsline.

I was looking for a bit of chain to repair an oak jewelry box, so I tried the Woodcraft Supply store in Springfield. The guy at the counter sent me down the strip mall to Fischer's Hardware. There still are mom and pop hardware stores in that part of the county, and Fischer's is one of them. It appears to be almost as much a neighborhood institution as Strosnider's in Montgomery County. Its current location looks like it might have been a K-Mart (or maybe a Kresge's) at one time. I saw someone pawing over a table of scratch-and-dent items; the aisles were low and tight, but it looked like everything you needed was there.

As the rule for trips like this goes, I didn't find an exact match for the chain I needed, but I found something close enough. And for 93 cents including tax, you can't kick. Heck, they probably expended more than 93 cents ringing me up. That's why shops like this have disappeared in the northwest part of the county.

[Werner Tübke's] Arbeiterklasse und Intelligenz ("Working Class and Intellectuals"), completed in 1973, is a wall painting of immense, floor-to-ceiling proportions, some 13 metres wide. It was painted with oils and tempura on wood, and it depicts a series of discourses laden with social commentary.

Sounds yummy, but probably too high in saturated fat for me.
