India's condor population crash: Oaks et al. propose
veterinary
pharmaceutical residues in domestic livestock as the cause of die-offs of Oriental White-Backed Vulture (Gyps bengalensis) (OWBV), along with two other species, in Pakistan and perhaps elsewhere. The agent is diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory, which leads to death by gout.
Diclofenac residues and renal disease were reproduced experimentally in OWBVs by direct oral exposure and through feeding vultures diclofenac-treated livestock.
