I think the white earbud headphones on my iPod are cool, but I can
understand this
phenomenon:
"The phenomenon in question is 'desired marginality,'" he said. [Consumer
behaviorist Tom] O'Guinn said for some Mac users, for example, Apple's
marginal status and low market share is a "source of pride." And as the iPod
goes mainstream, some early adopters are affronted by its lack of
exclusivity.
If you're listening to a compressed format, I think it's silly to trade up
to another headphone design, as some of the people interviewed by
Wired say they do. My problems with the earbuds are two: untangling
the wires, and keeping the foam pads in place. I'm likely to try one of the
third-party designs with retractable cords.

Phillip Ball writes an obituary for Jacques
Benveniste, French immunologist who was convinced that he'd observed
homeopathic healing properties in water.
... his failure to simplify his experimental system so that he could clarify
the precise nature of the effects he claimed to see, or the mechanisms
behind them, fell short of rigorous science.
* * *
There can be no doubt that Benveniste was genuinely convinced he had chanced
upon something revolutionary. It is a shame that he became isolated (he may
have played a part in that), which meant that genuine enquiry into his
curious findings was hampered by posturing on all sides.

Scott Rosenberg
gets it.
For
[Matthew] Klam, as for so many of us media pros, "the blogs that
succeed" is synonymous with "the blogs that reach a wide audience." But
publishing a blog is a nearly cost-free effort compared with all previous
personal-publishing opportunities, and that frees us all to choose different
criteria for success: Maybe self-expression is enough. Or opening a
conversation with a couple of new friends. Or recording a significant event
in one's life for others to find.
