Well, this is a surprise:
In a shocking move, Infinity has converted 20-year modern rock bastion WHFS
Washington, D.C., to Spanish as "El Zol" 99.1. The station will play a
mixture of Salsa, Merengue and Bachata, targeting adults 25-54.
I think this will be cool. But then I listen to more Latino music than your
average Anglo. To her chagrin, Leta found this out on last month's trip, as
we drove up the Central Valley on I-5 and I commanded her to find some salsa
on the radio.
Meanwhile WHFS had become almost unlistenable to me, since my primary drive
time slots (AM to work, late evening from rehearsal) were taken up pure
prattle, the radio equivalent of watching your friend squirt milk out his
nose.
'HFS's playlists had become indistinguishable from those of competitor
DC-101.
Those who mourn the passing of today's station largely don't remember the
early 90's marginalization of the station's truly interesting DJs like
Damian Einstein and Weasel.
