Life in a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. B.M.A.T.C., and Etruscan typewriter erasers. Blogged by David Gorsline.
Mike Needs, an editor at the Akron Beacon Journal, stands by his reviewer in the face of reader protests about a pan of the Akron Symphony:
Many readers expect an entertainment review to reflect the audience's overall experience instead of the technical aspects of the performance.
When did things change? When did (some) people come to the idea that reviewers should be handing out ribbons for participation to all artists, irrespective of merit?
A newspaper should never lose sight of its power to influence. Nor can it neglect its responsibility to offer criticism when a performance is poorly executed.
