I am 0 for 2 in my recent auditions. In one case, it was pretty much a long shot for me, and as soon as I saw the pool of people to cast from I knew I wasn't right for the part. More recently, I was called back against two other guys, and I thought I read very well, but the director didn't quite see it my way.

I am long past trying to second-guess directors—does he want someone younger, someone older, someone shorter, someone better-looking, someone who's just plain a better actor? Very often it's just a question of choosing between a known and an unknown quantity. That is certainly the case with John, and I've seen other directors, good directors, cast from their Rolodexes as well.
