Todd Gibson relays the unhappy news that Agnes Martin has passed.

Some paintings make for great public lecture material. Others are best used for quiet, personal contemplation.

Holland Cotter writes the Times obituary. Martin said, "The value of art is in the observer."

"Sometimes I wish that I lived the kind of life where I would know where all the Tiffany's are instead of all the McDonald's."

A research question: how much of the world is closer to a Tiffany & Co. location than to a McDonald's? For instance, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, there would be a stretch of Wisconsin Avenue less than a mile long leading out of the District up toward Bethesda.
