Life in a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. B.M.A.T.C., and Etruscan typewriter erasers. Blogged by David Gorsline.
Happy 57th birthday to David Mamet.

I found an adult Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) during my walk
yesterday. It was feeding on the remains of what we will call a domestic
animal.
I've seen this behavior before, but only in the car: The bird, aware of my
approach as I walked briskly, allowed me to come quite close, perhaps 10
yards or so. At last it flapped its great wings and lifted itself into the
air; it began an easy loop about 20 feet off the ground. I passed on, and
when I was 10 yards away from its meal and clearly moving away, it neatly
finished the single loop and returned to the spot where it had started. As
if to say, "You can have this if you like. No? Suit yourself."

Dale Keiger witnesses
Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens) at Chincoteague NWR:
Close your eyes and concentrate, and you could distinguish several layers of
sound. A garrulous chatter in a higher register overlay a steady, clackety
drone that often sounded like distant rolling stock. Individual geese
honked, or nearly barked like dogs. Here and there a duck complained, or a
wilder sounding bird would loft a plaintive cry across the water.
