Who knew? Fairfax County has coyotes (Canis latrans).
The good news for Fairfax County is that coyotes will help normalize two animal populations that have overgrown due to the lack of a natural predator, and have presented a nuisance problem for citizens. These are rats and Canada geese [Branta canadensis].
Mark Bekoff describes coyotes as "victims of their own success:"
Coyotes are frequently portrayed as cunning tricksters, gluttons, outlaws, spoilers, and survivors in American mythology and in Native American tales. These characterizations are based mainly on this maligned predator's uncanny ability to survive and reproduce successfully in diverse locations and in extremely harsh conditions, even during unrelenting and abusive onslaughts by humans.
