Happy
birthday, Marianne Moore. Laura L. in college was the first one to put
one of her books in my hands, the Viking Reader.
I used "Four Quartz Crystal Clocks" as a performance piece in an
interpretation class. This is the first line of the 1919 version of
"Poetry:"
I, too, dislike it: there are things that are important beyond all this
fiddle.
Update: A Marianne Moore Reader is still in print, but through another publisher now.
The reader reprints correspondence between Moore and Ford Motor Company from 1955. FMC solicited suggestions from Moore for a new car; they used none of hers, but went with "Edsel." Moore provided a panoply of more lyrical names, including "Silver Sword," "Resilient Bullet," "Turcotinga," "Mongoose Civique," and ultimately "Utopian Turtletop."
