The Shakespeare Theatre announces plans for a new building around the corner from the Lansburgh, facing MCI Center. The design is good, and the possibilities for reconfiguring the performance space are intriguing, but are there enough small donors to fund all the recent arts-related capital projects? As Jacqueline Trescott reports:

The theater has raised $42.5 million. It will have to raise the remaining $34.5 million from arts patrons already besieged with requests from a variety of local institutions. The Kennedy Center has to raise $250 million for two new buildings that will be on a new plaza. Arena Stage is planning to launch a $100 million capital campaign for its expansion. The Smithsonian is raising money for various campaigns to redo the interior of the National Museum of American History and to build the second phase of the upcoming Udvar-Hazy Center, the companion to the Air and Space Museum. The Corcoran Gallery of Art is, meanwhile, struggling to raise money for a $120 million addition designed by architect Frank Gehry.
