Whatever the motivation, the effect of the rampant increase in standing ovations has been accompanied byas with any other form of inflationa decrease in value. If almost every performance receives one, then it ceases to be a meaningful compliment...
Here in D.C., I generally see standing Os reserved for well-done premieres (and I am likely to join them). But I don't see a lot of the touring shows at the the Warner and the National, where I suspect there is more rising to the feet. It gets sort of weird to see standing ovations for community theater productions, but it has happened.
