Life in a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. B.M.A.T.C., and Etruscan typewriter erasers. Blogged by David Gorsline.
I am loyal to my dear alma mater. Even though I'm much prouder of the Nobel and Pulitzer winners that we've produced, I have a souvenir sweatshirt from our Rose Bowl trip. But I wince at this announcement in my alumni newsletter:
WILDCATS MOTOR TO MOTOR CITY BOWL - FOURTH BOWL GAME SINCE 1995!
Don your purple, pack up your pompons and come cheer on the team! Wildcats football heads to Detroit Dec. 26 to take on Bowling Green in the Motor City Bowl. It will be Northwestern's fourth bowl appearance since 1995 and its fifth overall. The Wildcats tied for seventh in the Big Ten with an overall record of 6-6, 4-4 in the conference against one of the toughest schedules in the country. Bowling Green was the West Division champion in the Mid-American Conference with a 10-3 record and was ranked 24th in the final BCS poll.
Didya notice the bit about finishing in the bottom half of the Big Ten? How much prestige is there in going to a bowl with no corporate sponsorship? Why don't they call it the Everyone Is A Winner For Participating Bowl and have done with it?

Gertrude M. Jones has touched my heart. I can only hope that when I get to be her age I can be as creatively cranky as she.
(Thanks to Tanya.)
