We close Anything Goes this afternoon. It's usually a bit of a downer to close on a matinee, as the house consists of what Leta calls "post-church nappers." We had a happy, nearly full house last night (90 or 95), so I will be content with that.
Somewhere in the middle of the run, I started to look forward to the two big chorus numbers in the second act, "Blow, Gabriel, Blow," and Cole Parter's chromatic sadism, "Public Enemy." My singing and movement isn't what you'd call good, but I blend in and nobody is getting hurt.
We've had our share of bad luck. Lily didn't make the afternoon curtain yesterday, because she was in a car accident about four blocks from the theater. She came in at about 2:10, mentally shaken only, and we had her ready to go for "Heaven Hop." Last Saturday, Bill came down with conjunctivitis during the matinee. Between shows he ran to the Chinatown CVS and came back with drops and an eye patch. Since he's been playing the captain with a brogue already, he has turned the patch into a bit.
The Warehouse Theater isn't quite seaworthy, as we discovered during a thunderstorm on our opening weekend.
I'm glad that I did the show. Will I do more musicals, as Leta fears/threatens? Time will tell.
