Richard Paul reports in a radio documentary on celiac disease, focusing on patients with severe symptoms who, in some cases, have lived for decades without being diagnosed.
Leta points out that many, many people have the disease but show very few symptoms. Thus the estimate that 1 in 133 Americans are afflicted—clearly not that proportion of people are running to the bathroom every hour with painful stomach cramps. And yet, even if you're not in any pain, because your ability to absorb nutrients is compromised, celiac disease can cripple or kill you. As Paul says in his report, "get the blood test."
