Paul Graham lays down a challenge:
...the most impressive people I know are all procrastinators. They're type-C procrastinators: they put off working on small stuff to work on big stuff.
What's "small stuff?" Roughly, work that has zero chance of being mentioned in your obituary. Graham links to an earlier post, in which he encourages high school students to think of going to class as their day job.
Working at something as a day job doesn't mean doing it badly. It means not being defined by it. I mean I wouldn't think of myself as a high school student, just as a musician with a day job as a waiter doesn't think of himself as a waiter.
And a lot of us would be better off to think of our day jobs as "day jobs." "Following your bliss" doesn't always put bread on the table, but your bliss may still be what you were meant to do, what your big stuff is. (Thanks to blogdex.) posted: 8:45:41 PM |
